Some Dark God

“The shadows in Catherine Balaq’s poetry are richly nuanced and playful. ‘Catch my dark / between your teeth’ invites one speaker. Returning to the body throughout, her quick imagination moves through bleak, unnerving territory with a lightness of touch, reshaping the world, a toad eating a family house, ‘his tongue under the walls’. This is sharply observed, stirring writing.”
John McCullough

“Such a dark, magnificent creation. I devoured the poems. Strident, compelling dispatches from the underworld, meticulously crafted. These poems will get under your skin, go straight for the heart.”
Helen Mort

Some Dark God is very sacred and very profane.

Autopsy

Some day they find your bare body
laid out in a room, shutters closed to the dark,
the dust of years thin as sheets around you.
Eyes staring, palms upturned on the ground.
They cut you wide, reach down inside you,
looking for your prayers. You slip your skin.
They say it’s just the heart that’s broken.
But you know, now your blood is cold,
as your whole soul gives up and groans,
listing loose and free into another world,
that your heart was open. Heavy, yes,
crushed and ruptured, but beating still.
And if there is a God, it is some dark God,
a very dark God who is watching you.
